Architecture in a Time of Transition. A View from India
»We are living through an era marked by profound transitions—environmental, social, political, and technological. Yet architecture has often been more comfortable imagining permanence than engaging with change. Its disciplinary traditions have privileged stability, order, and enduring form, frequently treating transformation as a condition to be managed rather than as a productive force in shaping the future. This lecture proposes transition as a critical lens through which to reconsider the role of architecture today. Rather than seeking definitive solutions, it argues for an architectural practice that works with uncertainty, incompleteness, and continual adaptation. Such an approach requires attention not only to buildings, but also to the evolving relationships between people, places, institutions, and ecological systems. The lecture explores how temporary occupations, informal practices, and incremental forms of change contribute to the making of cities. These conditions reveal forms of agency and imagination that challenge conventional distinctions between the formal and informal, the permanent and the temporary. An imagination attentive to temporality and change is essential if architecture is to contribute meaningfully to more resilient, equitable, and sustainable futures.«
